Colorectal Tumors (Cancer)

Colorectal Tumors: Detection and Treatment

Colorectal tumors refer to abnormal growths in the colon or rectum, which can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Early detection is crucial for effective treatment and achieving positive outcomes.

Types of Colorectal Tumors

There are two main types of colorectal tumors:

1. Benign (Non-Cancerous) Tumors

  • Adenomatous Polyps (Adenomas): These polyps have the potential to become cancerous over time, possibly leading to colorectal cancer.
  • Hyperplastic and Inflammatory Polyps: Generally harmless but require periodic monitoring.
  • Lipomas and Leiomyomas: These are Rare tumors that grow slowly within the colon wall.

2. colorectal cancer

  • Adenocarcinoma: The most common type of colorectal cancer, accounting for 90% of cases.
  • Carcinoid Tumors: Develop from hormone-secreting cells in the intestines.
  • Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs): Rare tumors that originate in the connective tissue of the colon.
  • Lymphomas: A type of cancer affecting immune cells that can impact the colon.

Symptoms of Colorectal Tumors

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should visit Dr. Ali Shafik for examinations, tests, and imaging to determine the appropriate treatment:

  • Noticeable changes in bowel habits, such as diarrhea, constipation, or narrow stools.
  • Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, which may appear bright red or dark.
  • Unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, chronic abdominal pain, bloating, or cramping.

Stages of Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer starts in the inner lining of the intestines, known as the mucosa. As the tumor progresses, it penetrates the rectal wall and spreads outward. The next stage involves the lymph nodes and blood vessels surrounding the rectum. In advanced cases, rectal cancer can spread to distant organs such as the liver.

To determine the stage of the tumor, doctors typically perform blood tests, chest X-rays, and CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis. Additionally, transrectal ultrasound is a crucial diagnostic tool for assessing tumor depth and determining lymph node involvement.
